You can feel terrible, have significant symptoms, and still be told your lab work is normal. So you start looking for optimal ranges instead. But is replacing "normal" with "optimal" really helping us understand what's happening?

In this episode, Dr. Eric Balcavage explains why laboratory values need to be interpreted in the context of symptoms, other lab findings, metabolic demand, and overall physiologic state. A number can be normal but inappropriate, or abnormal but appropriate for the state someone is in.

The goal isn't to chase a number. It's to understand what the number is telling us and why.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • What laboratory reference ranges actually tell us and what they don't

  • Why "optimal" ranges don't always explain persistent symptoms

  • The four ways to interpret a laboratory value: normal and appropriate, normal and inappropriate, abnormal and appropriate, or abnormal and inappropriate

  • Why a low Free T3 doesn't automatically mean you need T3 medication

  • How nutrition, sleep, stress, inflammation, activity, and recovery influence laboratory patterns

  • Why lab values may be signals of an underlying physiologic state rather than the problem itself

  • Why more testing and treating individual numbers don't always lead to better outcomes

Your lab results aren't a scorecard. They're information. The key is understanding what they mean for you and what needs attention first.

If you've been told your labs are "normal" but you still don't feel well, or you've spent years trying to optimize every number without understanding why those numbers are changing, this is exactly the kind of problem I work through with my clients.
