Dr. Sean Pastuch is back on the podcast, this time we dive into his new book “Live More, Hurt Less” and helping clients get from cleared to capable.
Dr. Sean Pastuch, DC, grew up around the fitness, health, and wellness industry. And when he graduated Chiro school, he ended up opening a clinic and a CrossFit gym. He didn’t want to be that Chiro who tells you, “You need to this exercise and be on “X” program.” Then, pat you on the back and say see you next week.
He works with people and athletes, who don’t want to deal with pain and injury anymore. And at the same time, don’t want to stop their training or don’t want to keep modifying their workouts every time there’s a workout that has overhead movements.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> The Fallacy of "Fragility" and Invalidation: Why telling clients to "just stop" doing activities when they hurt creates a self-fulfilling cycle of frailty, muscular atrophy, and heightened health anxiety.
=> The Psychosomatic Trap of Medical Diagnosis: How well-meaning doctors and therapists can accidentally catastrophic-size minor, age-normal MRI findings through poor choice of language—causing real, physical symptoms.
=> Why Pain Is a Capacity Problem, Not a Damage Problem: Discover how a client unable to dance for more than 30 seconds doesn't have a "bad back," but rather a stamina and load-capacity bottleneck that needs progressive exposure.
=> The Three Identities Driving Pain & Recovery: Learn why true long-term relief requires addressing your inner identity, physical movement expression, and social environment simultaneously rather than isolating physical symptoms.
=> The "Four Rules" to Distinguish Good Pain from Danger: A simple, 4-step framework to determine if workout discomfort is just noisy adaptation or an actual signal to stop and consult a medical professional.
=> How "Floors" Outperform Goals During Chronic Flare-ups: Why setting a absolute non-negotiable daily minimum (e.g., 5 minutes of nose-breathing push-ups) preserves psychological momentum when full workouts fall apart.
=> Bridging the "Messy Middle" from Cleared to Capable: Why traditional insurance-based physical therapy cuts off long before an athlete is actually ready to return to high-intensity training or sports.
=> The "Elevator vs. Escalator" Communication Shift for Doctors: How reframing a medical consultation from "help me stop hurting" to "help me get back to doing what I love" completely changes the treatment plan.
=> Overcoming the "All-or-Nothing" High-Performer Trap: Why elite, high-status clients often default to doing zero work out of shame when they don't have time for a full 60-minute session.
=> Desensitizing Fitness Overwhelm through Micro-Dosing: How assigning 2-to-3-minute non-strenuous interactions with home gym equipment can cure the psychological paralysis of loaded home gyms.
=> Why Walking Beats Cardio for Mental Processing: How 5-minute distraction-free, nose-breathing walks remove hyper-vigilance and help clients process subliminal life stressors affecting their pain.
=> The Hidden Danger of "Victimhood Communities": Why surrounding yourself with friends who normalize age-related decay and physical compromises actively sabotage your path to physical capability.
