In March 2020, Burden was at her family's Martha's Vineyard home navigating the early days of the pandemic when her husband of twenty years announced, without warning, that he was leaving her. In the memoir, she revisits their marriage, searching for clues that her husband was not who she always thought he was, and reckons with her own family history and the expectations placed on women in the face of betrayal.
