Meanwhile, the older sisters, Catherine and Sophia, endured five months of arduous captivity, forced labor, and severe trauma within Cheyenne encampments during a brutal winter before their eventual release. Catherine coped by sewing clothing, learning portions of the Cheyenne language, and navigating a complex dynamic of protection and abuse from her captors. Throughout the discussion, Scott stresses the importance of approaching frontier history with empathy and a balanced perspective, acknowledging both the horrific suffering endured by the captive sisters and the preceding cycles of trauma, displacement, and violence experienced by Indigenous tribes during the Indian Wars.
