What does it take to finish a mix quickly without second-guessing your instincts?
My guest today is JJ Catalyst, a Los Angeles-based recording engineer and mixer with credits spanning Disney, Showtime, and Billboard number ones. He's Emmy-nominated and known for blending modern pop with broadcast-ready production. We met at NAMM 2026, and he’s here to share his process and philosophy.
In this episode, JJ opens up about his journey from growing up with a family immersed in music, through building a home studio in Phoenix, to moving to LA and focusing exclusively on mixing. We discuss how he learned to record drums in unconventional spaces, the importance of space and low-end management in mixes, and his approach to trusting artist vision versus pushing bold creative moves. JJ emphasizes the value of working swiftly and trusting your instincts, avoiding endless revisions, and how that leads to more authentic, compelling music.
We also dive into technical topics like managing loudness in streaming, using dedicated plugins designed for transparency, and creative techniques like pushing limits beyond digital zero. JJ shares insights about working with community, the benefits of collaboration, and the importance of not getting lost in perfectionism. Plus, he recounts his experiences with classic console recreations, doing live mixes on vintage gear, and the joy of simplifying processes to focus purely on the music.
