Tonight on Damn You Hollywood we review the live-action remake of Moana. Released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on July 10, 2026, the film adapts Disney's acclaimed 2016 animated hit and marks the first live-action entry in the franchise. Directed by Thomas Kail in his feature film debut from a screenplay by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, the film stars Catherine Laga'aia as Moana alongside Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as Maui while also serving as a producer. Returning as Tamatoa is Jemaine Clement, with Rena Owen, John Tui, and Frankie Adams rounding out the cast. Disney first began exploring the remake in 2019 before officially announcing it in 2023 as part of its continued live-action strategy during the company's centennial celebration. Produced on a reported $200–250 million budget and filmed in both Hawaii and Atlanta, the project also carries personal significance for Johnson, who has described Maui and the story's Polynesian heritage as a tribute to his culture and his late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia.
