The Orlando Magic are set to hire San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney as their next coach. In Sweeney, they get a hard-nosed defensive coach with a strong development background.
Those two things have been central to the project that Jeff Weltman has been building in his time with Orlando. And the team is not turning back on them, even with a new coach in tow.
Sweeney has a lot of work ahead of him, though, once the Spurs are done in the NBA Finals. He is taking on a team with loads of expectations to win immediately. That is the challenge he is taking on as a new coach.
For many, that is a reason why the Magic are involved in the trade rumors for Giannis Antetokounmpo. But that forgets the other reason the team hired Sweeney. He is an excellent developmental coach.
The Magic did not hire Sweeney to get Giannis. They hired him to help Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner develop the same way he developed Giannis.
