The Number of the Beast was Iron Maiden’s first major international hit album. Its success was unexpected and caused a storm of controversy among religious and conservative groups who feared that the band’s Satanic images were corrupting the morals of youth.

The song’s lyrics are taken from Revelation 13:18: “Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is a man; his number is six hundred and sixty-six.”

Bruce Dickinson

Bruce Dickinson is the lead singer for British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He has been in the band since 1981, and is renowned for his vocal range and energetic stage presence. He has also written several books and presented a number of television shows.

He started his career as a frontman in local pub bands, before joining Samson in 1979. He then joined Iron Maiden, and made his debut with their 1982 album The Number of the Beast. The album’s title and cover art were a source of controversy, provoking criticism from religious groups and social conservatives. Some even organized events where copies of the album were burned.

The producer of the album, Martin Birch, was in a car accident with a minibus full of nuns during the recording. The cost of the repairs was PS666. This led to rumors that the album was cursed. Dickinson has also been trained operatically, which helped him develop his famous broad range of notes and enormous screams.

Steve Harris

Arry Harris is the man behind Iron Maiden’s world class bass playing. He is self taught and has a very distinctive sound. He is also an excellent songwriter and is known for his ‘gallop’ bass lines. Harris has a strong influence on many of the band’s songs including the epic openers Killers, Wrathchild, and Innocent Exile.

He has also co-written all of the band’s albums. In addition, he has produced and co-produced every album since Fear of the Dark. He has his own studio called “The Barnyard” and has even started a label to help up-and-coming bands.

He is a huge fan of West Ham United and has a tattoo of the club’s logo on his arm. Harris is a great supporter of the fans and always makes time for them. He has spoken out against bullying and has encouraged fans to be kind to one another. He is also a big supporter of charities.

Adrian Smith

Originally from Hackney in East London, England, Adrian Smith was a self-taught guitarist who picked up his first guitar at the age of 15. He was influenced by the rock music of Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore. He also took inspiration from the cult 60s TV spy series The Prisoner, and formed a group called Urchin with a school chum, Dave Murray.

He was a regular guest of the Asheville Lyric Opera, playing Doctor Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore and Papageno in The Magic Flute. He has performed at the Santa Fe Opera, where he was a member of the Apprentice Artist Program and appeared as Larkens in Gershwin’s La fanciulla del West and Friar Laurent in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette.

Upon his arrival at Iron Maiden, Smith proved to be an integral piece of the puzzle with fellow guitarist Steve Harris, forming one of metal’s most acclaimed twin-guitar duos. He co-wrote and played on the band’s seminal releases from 1982 to 1989, including Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, and Somewhere in Time.

Dave Murray

Murray is a talented guitar player whose legato-based solos are an important aspect of Iron Maiden’s sound. He has naturally strong fingers, which allow him to use hammer-ons and pull-offs in his playing. He also writes for the band, though he usually leaves lyrics to other members. He is a master of guitar harmony, and has an expansive vocabulary of chords.

He was born in Edmonton, London on 23 December 1956, and grew up “hanging around” record stores, where he would collect Jimi Hendrix and blues albums. At age 15, he formed his first band, Stone Free, with future Maiden member Adrian Smith. He then started answering advertisements in Melody Maker and regularly auditioned for bands at weekends.

Although a jazz pianist, Murray has also performed with rock musicians including guitarists John Hicks and Jimmy Burell. He has recorded duo albums with pianists Randy Weston and George Arvanitas. He is also an avid golfer and supports Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
