In this episode of Beyond Surviving, Seth Shelley and I explore and challenge the messages that male survivors are faced with, such as “Real men don’t get raped”, “You should have fought back”, “You must have enjoyed it or your body wouldn’t have responded the way it did.”
In a world where we are increasingly becoming aware of the prevalence of sexual trauma, we must bring men into the conversation as more and more the statistics are bearing out that boys are abused to nearly an equal degree as girls.
And yet, because of the messaging that boys/men receive, the way boys are socialized, men struggle to find their voice and share their stories.
That’s why I am so thankful that Seth Shelley is among the men who are paving the way for male survivors to speak up, be heard, and break the cycles of silence.
