This class covers the application and interpretation of models in stand and forest management. Models are important tools in sustainable management of forest ecosystems. Models can be used to plan silvicultural and forest interventions, whether to promote or sustain timber or non-timber values. Models can also be used to assess ecological hypotheses and long-term changes in ecosystems e.g. under scenarios of global climate change. Models are also important research tools, as they are abstractions of reality but also conceptualizations of our understanding of forest ecosystems, and both embody hypotheses and can be used to test novel hypotheses about forest systems.
