In March 2008, 24 students performed their spoken word poetry in a free-flowing, audience-participatory event known as a poetry slam. In the end, after the judges' scores were tallied, six poets were left standing. Everyone of those poets testified like the prophets old to the difficulties, and sometimes downright injustice, of life on earth. These poems mixed love gone wrong, war, child abuse, the apparent absence of God, humor and wit, and the power of overcoming that comes from the fact that suddenly the poet is not alone.
The Poetry Slam has become a fixture on campus, now hosted in the fall semester by students from the Poetry Workshop performing in the Inkwell common room of the English Department.
