This course explores issues surrounding the conservation of our biological resources. Topics to be covered span species-, population-, and ecosystem-level challenges with particular attention to biodiversity, the fragmentation of ecological communities, extinction, invasive species, and Protected Areas. The interplay between natural and social systems and the ramifications of management decisions are integrated throughout the course. While our discussions will take place primarily within a biological setting, we will also touch upon the importance of understanding the particular milieu (e.g. legal, bureaucratic, economic, etc.) within which a given management action needs be carried out.
