To prepare students for college-level reading, inquiry, and discussion, Michigan Technological University sponsors a Reading as Inquiry initiative each year for the new incoming class. Over the summer students read that year's chosen title. All first-year students are expected to read the book before arriving on campus. During Orientation students meet with a member of the faculty or staff and your Orientation team to discuss the book as a group. To top off the experience, the author speaks on campus in early September.

The Reading as Inquiry program is supported in part by a generous donation from David and Elsa Brule of Iron Mountain. Mr. Brule is a former member of Michigan Tech’s Board of Control.
