In Appalachia, the music of the faithful is rooted in the sacred and the secular. Congregational line singing, a call and response form of hymnody, can be traced to the parish church of 16th century England and the soulful balladry of the Appalachian Mountains. The devotional music of camp meetings and revivals is more closely allied to popular American influences, such as shape-note singing, quartet harmonization, and the mass production of songsters and hymnals. Whatever the influence, the religious music of Appalachia is deeply felt and truly sung.
