ÖKO:global

IFOAM is the worldwide umbrella organization for the organic movement. It observes and supports an ecologically, socially and economically balanced and responsible policy. In this capacity IFOAM gives advice to governments, to the EU and to the United Nations. IFOAM leads worldwide congresses and presentations with different topics about organic agriculture. In addition IFOAM has a part in the development of international quality standards and the agricultural legislation of EU.

IFOAM is – despite of its international and political importance - almost unknown in the German-speaking public. The discussion about organic agriculture is mainly not disputed in a global frame. Even in schools the organic economy and the organic agriculture is conveyed as a smallholder niche production, which considerably falls short of the reality. The operational reality and the socio-economical chances of the organic economy are unknown in the public. Also the global network of the organic economy in production and trade aswell as international cooperation betwen organizations (IFOAM, FAO, etc.) and, e.g. their part in the context of certifications, are not known.

Mission

There is a necessity for a presentation of the concerns and benefits of IFOAM in the German-speaking public. This is the task of the media studies project seminar of the University of Siegen 'ÖKO:global - organic concepts'. The students broache the issue of public relations and communication management of IFOAM. In cooperation with IFOAM we develop an image campaign and a public relations conception, as well as corresponding communication instruments in consideration of special interests and concerns of the organization. IFOAM as a cooperation partner provides an insight into their work, structure and strategy. We are supported with information and international contacts to plan campaigns and to suggest concrete arrangements. The "Entwicklungsbüro für ökologischen Landbau, Lindenberg" and a team of students has filmd the situation of organic farming in Costa Rica in February and March 2006, these shots were edited in the documentary "Die Welt spricht BIO".

Als internationale Dachorganisation der Öko-Anbauverbände verfolgt und fördert die IFOAM eine ökologisch, sozial und ökonomisch ausgewogene und verantwortliche Politik. In dieser Eigenschaft berät sie Regierungen, die EU und die Vereinten Nationen. Sie führt weltweit Kongresse und Veranstaltungen zu Themen der ökologischen Landwirtschaft durch. Zudem hat die IFOAM maßgeblichen Anteil an der Entwicklung internationaler Qualitätsstandards und nationaler bzw. europäischer Gesetzgebung.

Die IFOAM ist - trotz ihrer zunehmenden internationalen und politischen Bedeutung - der deutschsprachigen Öffentlichkeit praktisch unbekannt. Die Öko-Diskussion wird primär nicht im globalen Rahmen gesehen und geführt. Selbst in den Schulen wird ein Bild der Ökowirtschaft und des Öko-Landbaus als kleinbäuerlicher Nischenproduktion vermittelt, was wesentlich an der Realität vorbei geht. Nicht nur die betriebliche Wirklichkeit und die sozio-ökonomischen Chancen der Biowirtschaft sind in der Öffentlichkeit weitestgehend unbekannt, auch die globale Vernetzung ökologischer Wirtschaft in Produktion und Handel und die internationale Zusammenarbeit auf der Ebene von Verbänden (IFOAM, FAO, etc.) und deren Rolle, beispielsweise im Zusammenhang mit Zertifizierungen, ist nicht präsent.

Aufgabe:

Daher besteht Bedarf für die Präsentation der Anliegen und Leistungen der IFOAM in der deutschsprachigen Öffentlichkeit. Dieser Aufgabe widmet sich das medienwissenschaftliche Projekt-Seminar „öko:global! organic concepts“ der Universität Siegen, welches Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Kommunikationsmanagement der IFOAM thematisiert. In Kooperation mit der IFOAM entwickeln wir eine Image-Kampagne und eine PR-Konzeption sowie die entsprechenden Kommunikationsinstrumente unter Berücksichtigung der speziellen Belange der Organisation. Die IFOAM gibt als Organisationspartner – soweit dies möglich und nötig ist - Einblick in Ihre Arbeit, Ihre Strukturen und Planungen. Wir werden mit Informationen und internationalen Kontakten unterstützt, um eine Kampagne zu konzipieren und bis in die Vorschläge für konkrete Maßnahmen hinein zu gestalten. Als weiterer Kooperationspartner zur Thematik "Globale Ökowirtschaft" ist das Entwicklungsbüro für ökologischen Landbau, Lindenberg, beteiligt. Gemeinsam mit dem Entwicklungsbüro hat ein Team des Medienstudiengangs bereits im Februar und März diesen Jahres in Costa Rica Filmaufnahmen zur Situation des ökologischen Landbaus gemacht, die im Projekt weiter bearbeitet und ergänzt werden.
