A poor fisherman pulls a sealed brass jar from the sea and releases an enormous jinni. Instead of thanking him, the furious spirit announces that the fisherman must die. With no strength and nowhere to run, the fisherman has only one weapon left: his mind.
In this episode of Short Stories with Peter, enjoy a clear, slow B1–B2 adaptation of The Fisherman and the Jinni, a traditional tale from The Thousand and One Nights. Peter narrates the story, while the fisherman and the jinni have distinct dramatic voices supported by restrained radio-style sound design.
After the story, Peter explains useful language from the episode, including:
- barely make a living
- seal something shut
- lose your temper
- outsmart someone
This newly written abridgement draws on Andrew Lang’s public-domain retelling in The Arabian Nights Entertainments. It shortens the original frame and nested episodes while preserving the central conflict, the fisherman’s trick and the story’s resolution.
