Republic vs Democracy — nobody on the street could tell me the difference. So I'm reading you the article I wrote in 2007 explaining exactly why.
I go straight to the source: James Madison in the Federalist Papers, Edmund Randolph at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, John Adams's 1814 warning that "democracy never lasts long," Chief Justice John Marshall, and Thomas Jefferson's own inaugural address. Then I pull out something almost nobody has seen — the 1928 US Army Training Manual (TM 2000-25) that spelled out, in plain language, exactly what separates a republic from a democracy... before it was quietly pulled from circulation a few years later.
