A joint study from the University of Manchester and Princeton University reveals that the Netflix adaptation of "Heartstopper" triggered a massive, worldwide surge in book sales. Research shows that the streaming series successfully moved the story from a specialized graphic novel category into the mainstream young-adult market. This transition was supported by local publishing networks and translation efforts, which allowed the popularity of the show to translate into physical purchases across eleven different countries. Interestingly, the study found that while television viewers focused on LGBTQ+ representation, book buyers primarily viewed the series as a popular gift for family members. Ultimately, the data suggests that on-screen media can fundamentally change how a literary work is consumed and perceived by a global audience.
