Welcome to the Mormon News Roundup, where we take a deep dive into the history and evolution of Mormon theology.
In this episode, we examine some of the most dramatic developments and contradictions in LDS teachings about God, the Godhead, human exaltation, and the nature of the divine.
• The Evolution of the Godhead — How early Book of Mormon teachings about one God compare with Joseph Smith’s later teachings about a plurality of gods.
• Heavenly Mother — Why the doctrine of an eternal female counterpart to God became an important part of LDS theology.
• The Virgin Birth — Brigham Young’s controversial teachings about the literal physical parentage of Jesus Christ.
• Changes to Sacred Texts — The evolution of passages in the Book of Mormon and the removal of the Lectures on Faith from the Doctrine and Covenants.
• The Holy Ghost Paradox — How the LDS concept of a spirit-only Holy Ghost creates some fascinating questions about exaltation, physical bodies, celestial marriage, and eternal progression.
From the 1830 Book of Mormon to later teachings from Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Orson Pratt, Bruce R. McConkie, and other LDS leaders, this episode explores how Mormon ideas about God and the universe developed—and sometimes dramatically changed—over time.
What happens when doctrines about God, exaltation, and eternal progression evolve? And what questions are left unanswered?
Keep asking questions. Keep examining the history.
