City finances and economic doldrums have real effects: restaurants shuttered, businesses seeking greener pastures, and commercial districts empty. Chicago appears to be on the accelerated path of Old Detroit from the 1970s and 1980s. Thus is always the unavoidable path when government insinuates itself into every nook and cranny of what would otherwise be a functioning free market. There is a magic wand that could be employed to solve all of its problems--but privatization is so far beyond the extremely limited imaginations of its leaders that the decline seems inevitable.
