What does it mean to reconnect with a part of your identity that has always been yours, but that you never quite felt entitled to claim?
Stacy Carlson returns to Timeless Spirituality to share her journey of reconnecting with her Indigenous heritage. Although Stacy is both Hoopa and Hopi, she grew up wrestling with the feeling that she didn't look Indigenous enough to fully belong. Over the last several years, relationships with family members, visits to the Hoopa Valley Reservation, and a deeper exploration of her ancestry have begun to change that.
But that exploration has also forced Stacy to confront some painful history.
She shares the unexpected encounter that led her to research Indian boarding schools, including the realization that her own great-grandmother had attended one. As a medium, Stacy also describes connecting with an ancestor who she believes experienced one of those schools and asked Stacy to tell her story.
From there, Daniel and Stacy explore the lasting effects of historical trauma, missing and murdered Indigenous people, the meaning of "Land Back," and why acknowledging what happened doesn't have to mean remaining trapped in the past.
The conversation also wrestles with some uncomfortable questions: What responsibility do people today have for atrocities committed by previous generations? How do we acknowledge privilege without inheriting personal guilt for actions we didn't commit? And after generations of injustice, what does meaningfully moving forward actually look like?
For Stacy, reconnecting with her heritage isn't only about uncovering what was taken or grieving what her ancestors endured. It's also about recognizing what survived.
