In the late 1990s, Colombia faced a horrifying discovery when dozens of young boys' remains were uncovered in mass graves around Pereira. Authorities initially suspected cult activity due to the disturbing, ritualistic nature of the mutilations. Over time, however, the investigation uncovered the work of a single man, Luis Garavito, also known as “La Bestia,” a brutal serial killer responsible for the torture and murder of over 100 children across Colombia. His crimes, fueled by deep-seated psychological trauma and a methodical, deceptive approach, terrorized communities and exposed grave social injustices toward vulnerable children. Despite his horrific acts, Garavito’s sentence was eventually reduced, inciting public outrage over the limitations of Colombia’s judicial system.
