What should you actually do in your first English lesson? How much should you prepare, what questions should you ask, and how can you help everyone feel comfortable?
Welcome to the first episode of How to English TEFL Podcast with Gav and Em! We’re two EFL teachers sharing honest experiences of teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
We discuss first-lesson nerves, preparation for groups and one-to-one lessons, icebreakers, remembering names, assessing English levels and understanding students’ goals. Gav recalls an awkward question activity, while Em shares how late arrivals turned introductions into a memorable repetition exercise.
We also ask how much teachers should share about themselves and whether every first lesson needs a specific language point. For students, we offer practical ways to prepare, ask questions and take useful notes.
