In December 2017, authorities in Japan responded to a distress call from a couple reporting the death of their 33-year-old daughter, Airi Kakimoto. What they discovered was far more disturbing than expected Airi had been imprisoned in a windowless concrete room for 15 years, subjected to extreme neglect, malnutrition, and freezing temperatures. Her parents, Yasutaka and Yukari Kakimoto, were later convicted for her death, but their sentencing sparked widespread outrage over whether justice had truly been served.
