While 2023 was all about the device for the IoT industry, 2024 is already shaping up to emphasize the device even more than before.
The overarching theme of Eseye’s predictions for 2023 was how mobile network operators (MNOs) were finally going to cede control of IoT connectivity to enterprises. The predictions didn’t quite play out as expected, but they were fairly accurate:
The MNO lock was finally broken, but the driver was the eSim rather than the hyperscaler threat.
There’s more interest in roaming between private and public networks, but adoption is a little slower than anticipated.
People are adopting multi-radio access type (RAT) technology — as part of operator-agnostic connectivity, which is Eseye’s DNA — though not necessarily in the same device. The next step is putting them together.
Consumer-enterprise IoT convergence is happening, as evidenced by home-based EV chargers, home security, remote patient monitoring, rising interest in IoT within elderly care, and the sheer proliferation of devices.
