This week, Jerry and Jody are joined by Tom Vartanian to discuss his recent article in The Hill: “It’s Time for a New Secure Internet.” We discuss the enormous vulnerabilities and risks that an insecure internet creates for people’s privacy and for our economy, particularly the risks for our financial services infrastructure. We trace the history of how this vulnerability developed and discuss the conditions under which effective data protection might emerge as a high national priority.

Tom Vartanian is a former financial services regulator, a prominent lawyer, a law professor, and influential thought leader in Washington, DC. He is the author of numerous books and articles on financial services and technology and his most recent book, 200 Years of Financial Panics: Crashes, Recessions, Depressions and the Technology that Will Change It All, provides a more fulsome discussion of the issues explored in this episode.
