In this episode, Jenn discusses Nehemiah chapter five, where the Israelites are facing internal problems that hinder the rebuilding of the Jerusalem wall:
- The mistreatment of the poor by the wealthy and powerful in Jerusalem, who are charging exorbitant interest rates and selling their fellow Jews into bondage. This is a clear violation of the Old Testament laws, which prohibit charging interest to fellow Jews and selling them into slavery.
- The divide in Jerusalem - a major concern given the city's already precarious situation.
- Nehemiah takes action by calling a meeting with the nobles and rulers and urging them to stop charging interest and selling their fellow Jews into slavery.
- The nobles agree to stop charging interest and restore the people's fields, vineyards, and homes.
