The Documentary "Who Killed Nancy?"
The 1986 biopic Sid and Nancy largely frames their deaths around a tragic, drug-fueled descent. However, if you are looking into the real-world investigation, the 2009 documentary Who Killed Nancy? directed by Alan G. Parker re-examined NYPD evidence and interviewed 182 people, heavily arguing that Vicious was physically incapable of the crime and pointing the blame back toward the missing money and independent dealers. 


The true identity of who killed Nancy Spungen remains officially unresolved, though her boyfriend and Sex Pistols bassist, Sid Vicious, was the prime suspect and charged with her murder. On October 12, 1978, Spungen bled to death from a single stab wound to the abdomen in Room 100 of the Hotel Chelsea in New York City. Because Vicious died of a heroin overdose less than four months later while out on bail, the case never went to trial and was legally closed. Over the decades, three primary theories have dominated the mystery:

1. Sid Vicious Killed Her
This is the official police theory. The weapon used was a hunting knife owned by Vicious. He gave conflicting statements, initially confessing by saying, "I did it... because I'm a dirty dog," before later recanting and claiming he had been asleep after taking heavy doses of sedatives. 

2. A Robbery and Drug Deal Gone Wrong
The Hotel Chelsea was highly chaotic that night, with numerous drug dealers and visitors drifting in and out of Room 100. A substantial stack of cash belonging to the couple went missing from the room. Many of Vicious's peers—including Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren—strongly believed Sid was passed out from drugs and that a thief stabbed Nancy when she caught them stealing. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

3. Actor and Drug Dealer Rockets Redglare
A prominent alternative theory points to Rockets Redglare, a late actor, stand-up comedian, and drug dealer who served as Vicious’s bodyguard. Redglare had delivered drugs to the room hours before the body was found. According to some investigators and punk rock historians, Redglare allegedly killed Spungen during a struggle when he tried to rob the apartment. Redglare
