My heart hurts a little bit every time I hear someone refer to a past relationship as “failed.”

To me, it diminishes what you shared with that person at one time or another. Even if things didn’t work out, even if things ended badly, don’t be so quick to dismiss the time and energy poured into that relationship, along with the lessons that can be and hopefully were gained from being with that person.

Be mindful of the words you choose, because language matters and the words we use play a big role in shaping your reality.

A relationship is never a failure.

Relationships are our greatest teachers, if you allow them to be.

  • Have you taken responsibility for your actions in the relationship?
  • Have you examined old patterns that were played out?
  • Did you learn and grow?

Then I consider it a smashing success.

Stop buying into the bullshit, shame-drenched societal narrative that if a relationship doesn’t turn into 65 years of marriage and ‘till death do you part’ that it’s not successful.

You get to make the decision about what you consider to be a success and the kind of human you are upon exiting a relationship.

And - it can actually even possible to have a relationship and leave someone better than you found them. (This doesn’t always happen of course, but it is very much a possibility)

When we love someone, we become woven into each other’s stories, for better and sometimes perhaps for worse, though it’s more about how you choose to view it.

Re-write the narrative you’ve created around it in your head, and most importantly…

Cherish your bravery for having opened up your heart to love.
