Tesla's self-driving Cybercab has been spotted on the roads of the South Island.

Photos shared to the Rare and Unique Car Spotting New Zealand Facebook group show one of Tesla's gold Cybercabs travelling along Cardrona Valley Road, with reports confirming the vehicles are cold-weather testing.

FutureCentre.nz founder Melissa Clark-Reynolds says Tesla's playing catch-up to robotaxi competitor Waymo.

"They're deployed on the roads in the States, particularly San Francisco and a few other cities, and they're driverless. Weirdly, American regulations require them to have a steering wheel, but no one has to sit in the drivers' seat."
