Soon after 1870, at a boarding school near London, the Latin master makes a noise in his throat and rushes out of the room partway through marking an exercise, and when the boys go up to his desk, they count seventeen papers from a class of sixteen; the extra one, written in red ink in a hand none of them knows, says, "If you don't come to me, I'll come to you." One of the boys keeps it, and when he takes it out of his locker that afternoon, the writing is gone.
