The lecture sets out to explore the role of port cities beyond Europe in the era of globalization between c.1840 to 1930. They were the ‘hubs’ and ‘nodes’ through which much of the global traffic of goods, people, money and ideas had to pass. But how far were they able to propagate liberal, cosmopolitan and ‘modernising’ values? Using the cases of New Orleans, Izmir and Singapore, the lecture suggests the limits of their influence over their hinterlands and also their vulnerability to change in the regional and global geopolitical regime.
