In April 1993, 20-year-old Sophie Sergie, a bright and ambitious Alaska Native woman, was brutally murdered in a dormitory bathroom at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her case went cold for nearly three decades, despite the presence of DNA evidence, leaving her family and community searching for answers. It wasn’t until advances in forensic genealogy in 2018 that investigators finally identified her killer, bringing long-awaited justice to a case that had haunted Alaska for years.
