Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO WALK AWAY WITH SOMETHING and TO GET AWAY WITH SOMETHING

In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase "to walk away with something". Now this phrase has two meanings. The first meaning means to win something easily. Maybe if you think about your favorite football team, if they won a game eight to one, we would say that they walked away with it, that they walked away with the win. It was really easy for them to win. But this phrase also means, the phrase "to walk away with something" also means to steal something. A few years ago, Jen and I had some flowers for sale on our roadside stand. We had a few bouquets out there and someone walked away with a few of them. That means they came, they took the bouquets and they didn't pay for them. So when you say someone walks away with something, it can mean that they've won something easily or that they've stolen something. So that's the meaning of that phrase.

The second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase, "to get away with something". When you get away with something, it means you do something you're not supposed to do, and you don't get caught. Sometimes this happens at school. Sometimes students do things they're not supposed to do and they get away with it. Maybe they cheat while they're taking a test and the teacher doesn't catch them. In that situation, we would say that they're "getting away with it". They're doing something they're not supposed to do, and no one is catching them doing it. Sometimes this happens when people walk away with something. They actually end up getting away with it because no one actually catches them doing it.So to review, when you walk away with something, it can mean that you won something easily, or it can mean that you stole something. Well, not you. Well, hopefully you don't steal things. I know you guys don't steal things. That wouldn't be good. And to get away with something simply means to do something you're not supposed to do and to not get caught, to not suffer the consequences of doing something you're not supposed to do. It does happen once in a while in school, by the way.But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Eugene. Hi, Mr. Bob. I am a little bit confused. Your favorite season of the year is winter, but you want to be a bear and sleep through it. You definitely should be a polar bear. And my response was this. I like winter for two reasons. It's really nice to be outside in the snow, but it's also really nice to be inside in a cozy house. That's where the desire to sleep comes in.So yeah, I know it might sound a little bit confusing. It might sound confusing for someone who says they like winter to then say that they want to be a bear and sleep, but yes, there are two really cool things about winter. The first thing is it's awesome to be outside in all the snow. And the second thing is that it's really nice to be inside a really warm house, especially if you have a wood stove or something else that heats the house in a way that makes it super warm and super cozy. Anyways, I wanted to, oh, by the way, thank you Eugene, for that comment.
