Obesity is a touchy subject that many physicians don’t like to bring up. Especially with pregnant women. It’s a fine line of trying to educate and offending. I know some patients view even addressing obesity as body shaming so it’s really trying to make sure the patient understands that we are coming from a place of love (Because yall know I love yall) and help. Obesity in pregnancy automatically puts you at a high risk for complications in pregnancy. Because of these higher risks, I make sure to educate my patients on how to decrease their BMI before pregnancy and how to safely navigate a healthy diet and activity routine while pregnant. I want you to not be embarrassed by the number or diagnoses of obesity. I want you to be aware of the diagnoses and how you should be monitored during your pregnancy. It’s not something you should run away from and it shouldn’t be ignored by you or your obstetrical provider. You should both be on the same page so you and your child will make it through safely and alive. I want you to be well versed on this so when you recognize something it’s right, you can speak up.
