Central State Hospital, originally known as the Central Lunatic Asylum, was the first all-black psychiatric hospital in Virginia. While the facilities were ahead of their time, lack of funds led to understaffing and overcrowding. This led to mistreatment of patients and a huge scandal uncovered in the 1980s.
