Neville Cardus’ two great passions were music and cricket. He described how one majestic stroke maker ‘made music’ and ‘spread beauty’ with his bat. Between the two wars, he became the laureate of cricket by doing the same with words.

In this latest Guerillashire, Tony Bishop interviews multi award winning author Duncan Hamilton, who in ‘The Great Romantic’, casts a new light on the enigmatic Cardus and demonstrates how he changed spots journalism for ever.

Along with Annie Chave, the discussion also covers Hamilton’s life and work, including ‘Kings of Summer’ a treasure of a book that takes us back to the final game of the glorious 2016 County Cricket season, when Middlesex met Yorkshire at Lords, Somerset waiting in the wings should the match end in a draw.

Through Duncan’s Hamilton, the spirit of Neville Cardus is ever present.
