Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyable – And it what a delight it was connecting with today’s guest. Hard to imagine really that ten years have past since we first crossed paths for a sit down interview in Halifax that’s when his debut feature HOW TO BE DEADLY screened at the Atlantic International Film Festival. Rest assured his creativity didn’t stop there. In the years since he’s added plenty of directing and producing credits to his roster – from comedy series work on shows like The Rick Mercer Report and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, to documentary projects including Absolutely Canadian and Good People. But amidst all those efforts his sophomore feature was taking shape and now after an Award Winning return to the Atlantic International Film Festival this past fall he’s set to take his film SKEET across the country this week. It’s a gritty drama about a just released convict who’s determined to make a fresh start in his old neighbourhood – no easy feat when he’s confronted with so much of the same and a world of difference all at once. So you best believe we’ll talk about all of that and so much more! Including why it took seven years to film SKEET and the shorthand he had with his friend – former rocker Sean Dalton in the lead role. We’ll also hear his process for casting the rest of the picture, discover his ties to the Newfoundland neighbourhood where they filmed and learn why it made sense to shoot the whole thing in black and white. Plus we’ll get to 1st Things First, play a truly enlightening round of INsights IN 10 and even spins some of his favourite songs throughout the hour. So with all that ahead we best get to it. Here’s my telephone conversation with the one and only Nik Sexton. (you’ll find the player at the bottom of this post)
