Rob shares the great Sir Bobby Robson’s 11 commandments of football in this episode of Leader Manager, Coach and discusses how these can be applied to all walks of life, not just football. Rob shares the importance of having self-control, why you should always react positively to criticism and the value in understanding what makes people tick.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

These eleven principles were written by Sir Bobby himself, in his handwriting and read by his wife, Lady Elsie. They’re from one of the most respected, professional managers that England has produced and yet they apply to any situation.

You have to be in control of yourself before you can control anybody else. Learn to control and be in charge of yourself before you try to take charge of others.

If you master the art of listening by keeping your mouth closed and your ears open and observing the situation, then that will take you a long way.

Be self-disciplined so that you can command discipline from others. If you are disorganised and lacklustre it may be difficult to request the required amount of input, timekeeping and effort from others who will be a part of your team.

Understand individuals and know what makes them tick. We are all individuals and we all want to be understood. Sometimes we think we need something from somebody when all we want and need is to be understood. If you want to be a great leader, manager or coach, understanding people will take you miles and miles.

React positively to criticism. Doing so decreases stress. You are going to be criticised, berated and knocked down, you cannot stop the way people talk about you but you can control how you respond, that is your power.

BEST MOMENTS

“Be a winner and be single-minded on an outcome.”

“Who wants to be involved with somebody dishonest?”

“The most successful ones are those that take the time to get to know their fellow coaches, their fellow professionals.”

“People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
