Rob talks to swimming coach, Hilton Slack, one of the most successful in his pursuit, about the challenges of coaching and leadership, the responsibility we have to the generation of tomorrow, and the many lessons learned during his long and illustrious career.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Many coaches begin by splitting their time during the day, working a full-time job in the daytime, and coaching in the evenings. It’s a great way of getting coaching time under the belt before taking it up professionally.

Coaching is about displaying your belief in someone. It involves long term development, and the process of coaching someone to their best current ability, then gradually pushing them further.

Coaches starting out are not doing it for the salary, which can be pitifully small at the outset. They do it for the love of the sport, and because of a desire to shape and mould the skills and lives of others.

Young people are so impressionable. The responsibility we have as shapers of youth is critical. Imprinting a positive, powerful message onto them can last a lifetime.

We must ensure that we are not so driven by the aims of the plan, that we forget to inject the element of fun and creativity into our teachings.
