The Informed SLP: “In the outpatient setting, patients with unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI) don’t typically have dysphagia (the aspiration rate may be as low as 3%). One might expect—like several researchers have—that the reason some people with UVFI aspirate is because of impaired laryngeal adduction. Well, it turns out we’ve been lookin’ at the wrong structure, and analysis of swallow physiology shows a different story.”
