About this episode

This is a time of year when a lot of people are talking about taking better care of themselves—things like eating healthier, starting to exercise, getting more sleep, setting goals, or setting boundaries in their lives. But self-care, even though it sounds like a good thing, can be a touchy subject in some Christian circles. Let’s talk about self-care and what role—if any—it should play in the lives of Christian women.

  1. What is self-care? What does that term mean to you?
  2. Should Christians practice self-care? Did Jesus practice self-care, and what does the Bible say about it?
  3. What kinds of self-care should we engage in? What kinds of activities are likely to promote real joy, peace, and health in our lives? What kinds of activities are unlikely or less likely to promote those things?
  4. What is something you’re doing to practice self-care this year, and what would you say to our listeners to encourage them to take care of their bodies, minds, spirits, and relationships this year?

From the Bible

"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint." Jeremiah 31:25

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Genesis 2:2

And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. Luke 24:41-43

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. Luke 8:22-23

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42

So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back. Numbers 12:15

So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun. Ecclesiastes 8:15
